The major aim of this course is to further develop your knowledge and skills in the areas of information systems developments concepts that are of most significance to business students.

At the end of this course students will be familiar with all aspects and issues associated with developing information systems in a business / accounting context and will be able to work effectively with information technology professionals on the development of information systems.

After completing this course students should be able to:

• Describe what an information system (IS) is and the various types of information systems that could exist in a medium to large business organisation.
• Describe the various stakeholders involved in information systems development and operation with emphasis on the functions and role of the systems analyst.
• Discuss alternative software development life cycles and methodologies.
• Use appropriate techniques to design and develop entity relationship diagrams for simple business related information systems.
• Integrate and cross check Data Flow Diagrams (DFD) and Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERD) for simple business related information systems.
• Understand the rationale for and the contents of a requirements specification for an information system.
• Describe the various components of systems design.
• Use Integrated Accounting Software (IAS) to illustrate the principles and concepts covered in the course and how it relates to information systems development.
