{tab Information about the Strand}
Gender Studies
Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary program combined with programs in other strands from within and outside the School. Taken as a major or a minor, it gives students the opportunity to examine women and gender divisions in society from a variety of perspectives. Students try to consider factors, which determine women’s positions in different societies, how women have been written about in literature, and how femininity and masculinity are constructed within societies.
History
The History Discipline provides courses in a major sequence which can be continued into our Honors program and post-graduate studies. History may also be taken as a minor and the courses may be combined with ones in Political Science and Economics. History is of compelling interest because it can explain how PNG and the world came to be what they are now. Knowledge of history deepens our understanding of the present. However, it is also a critical discipline which tries to increase our knowledge of the past and to develop the arguments and analyses which enable us to understand it. The skills which students develop in studying history – collection of material, selection, organization into an argument – are those which will be useful outside the university. Empowered with such skills, our graduates can enhance the development of organizations in the public and private sectors and civil society.
Philosophy
In Philosophy, students are introduced to four broad categories of the subject, which include Epistemology (study of what we can claim to know); Logic (study of the formal rules of Thought); Metaphysics (study of the basic constituents of reality); and Ethics (the study of the moral principles of action). Students often choose philosophy because it can make them better persons in terms of their thinking and moral considerations.
Students pursuing a degree in Philosophy take courses offered under the broad categories listed above, while students majoring in other programs like Psychology, Politics, Literature and History can take philosophy as a minor. Success of our philosophy students in most graduate education and in their later careers has been attributed to the fact that they are better prepared in formal thought, structural relationships, abstract models and deductive reasoning.
